School flies high with national prize

Jayden Lochhead can be forgiven for being the teacher's pet at Maungatapu School this week after helping the school to second place in a national safety video competition.

The school received the welcome news of its accolades in the Air New Zealand School Safety Video Competition this week, coming away with eight HP Chromebooks worth around $500 each.

The airline partnered with Te Papa to encourage Kiwi kids to get creative and film their own version of an Air New Zealand safety video as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations.

And it's a result that has the school 'stoked”, given that two weeks prior to entries closing the school's creation didn't exist.

Maungatapu School senior team leader Deirdre Duggan says it wasn't until pupil Jayden approached her about the competition that they put the challenge to the Year 5 and 6 students.

After a quick brainstorm, it was decided a song was appropriate given the children's love of music.

The song, sung by 55 pupils, covers fastening seatbelts, stowing away magazines and iPods, and using oxygen masks, all encapsulated in a catchy tune.

Teachers helped with the lyrics and guided pupils through the video editing process before it was sent off to the judges.

'The kids really rose to it and we had such a great time,” says Deirdre.

'They were stoked and we kept playing it because they loved it and had a great time.”

Deirdre says claiming second place is an awesome achievement considering there were around 62 entries from across the country.

Avalon Intermediate School was named the winners, meaning the Hutt Valley school wins a trip to Auckland to attend the airline's 75th anniversary exhibition and opening at Auckland War Memorial Museum later this year.

'Everyone is just so excited,” she adds. 'You should have heard them erupt when I told them. I had to take the roll before or else I wouldn't have got anything out of them.

'The one young lad who suggested it [Jayden] is pretty stoked.”

Deidre says the new laptops will be a great boost for the school and its pupils.

'We're in the middle of increasing our teaching knowledge and equipment using IT around the school,” she explains, 'so it's come at a very cool time.”
