Drunk driver busted in CBD

A 24-year-old Tauranga man has been caught driving more than four times over the legal alcohol limit.

Tauranga City Council camera operators observed the man driving all over the road last night.

A man blew 1108 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath when police stopped him in the CBD last night.

Tauranga Police duty Senior Sergeant Rich Martin says the operators called police, who stopped the driver in the CBD.

'He blew 1108 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath,” says Rich.

The adult limit is 250 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

'The driver has come to the attention of the camera operator and they have called the police,” he adds.

'Even if police aren't around, people are being watched.”

The man will appear in Tauranga District Court this week charged with driving with excess breath alcohol and disorderly behaviour.

ATTEMPTED MANSLAUGHTER meh

Well although this is a serious breach of the legal driving limit, it is ridiculous to call it "attempted manslaughter". That is the dumbest thing I've heard for awhile. If we prosecute on 'maybe's' then our justice system is more flawed than it is already.

SORRY

But the problem is that while he set out to have a few beers (assuming that he was on the beers) by the time that he had a "few beers" he was beyond the question of "attempted manslaughter" and such a charge it would NEVER stand up in court. Such a charge requires that the prosecution PROVE that he set out to undertake an act that WOULD possibly lead to DEATH.

Anyone who chooses to drink & drive is deliberately breaking the law. How can you people support the actions of any such person?. Perhaps you should witness 1st hand the potential consequences of such a deliberate & selfish act. If you can afford the drink you should also be able to use a taxi or tow truck equally. If you effected any of my loved ones you would be praying for the Police to protect you not avoiding them . Zero limit for all ! I support Kiwis.
