Drivers continue to flout phone laws

More and more people are continuing to put their lives, and the lives of others, at risk by using mobile phones while driving.

Recent figures show an increase in the number of people caught using their mobiles while behind the wheel in the Bay of Plenty.

Bay of Plenty road policing manager Inspector Kevin Taylor says the figures show police enforcement has steadily increased from 2010 through to 2014, with numbers up to 874 from 278.

In the Western Bay of Plenty that number has gone from 138 in 2010 to 367 in 2014.

In 2012 there was a peak in the number of people snapped using their phones while driving, with a total of 380 people caught.

Kevin believes higher demerit points may be what is needed to deter people.

'Higher demerit points and loss of licence may provide the motivation some people need,” says Kevin.

'If those who habitually text and drive were exposed to the trauma our staff regularly see it would provide motivation enough to stop their behaviour.”

With the increase in the number of people flouting the laws on using phones while driving, people are calling for harsher penalties.

Kevin says fines are one method of getting people's attention.

'Clearly if people continue to text and drive or use their cell phones while driving, they show little regard for the law or the safety of others,” he adds.

'Having attended crashes and reviewed the files from fatal crashes where, but for the use of a cell phone, some people would still be alive, I find it hard to reconcile the absolute need people have to communicate balanced against the high risk they expose themselves and others to.”

Wish I got a dollar for each time I see people using their phones. I would be able to afford a chauffeur! I see at least 4-5 people using their phones everyday. Don't understand why. Hands free kits are so cheap....cheaper than a fine!

The reason

Many people are obsessed with mobile phones so at the slightest hint of a text or call people dive for the phone to see what it is. Also as 1/2 the population is completely unorganized they think it is alright then to call frequently while driving. Yes they are placing the life of themselves (perhaps not as important ...) their passengers and anyone else on the road in danger. Perhaps demerits and fines should be for all passengers in the car then all passengers would act to stop it.

Praulty Fines

Who are the idiots that decide on the penalties for using a cell phone while driving. They must be thick as pig s--t.Place a proper deterrant on .Confiscate cell phone and twelve months cancellation of liscence. There are enough accidents on the road now without these idiots driving.A proper deterrant will make them think twice. Penalties

If the primary penalty is a fine, many people will have no respect for it as its easily dismissed as revenue gathering. If the primary penalty is demerit points and loss of licence or suspension, then the penalty is more effective. The other issue though, drivers are distracted by plenty of things while driving, how do you reduce/police other forms of distraction?

Seems very apparent with the amount of accidents and the frequency which upon they happen coupled with the road saftey awareness week it would be timely to reintroduce the good old or not so good traffic cop again.Obviously the current system it is not effective. Reflective by the amount of law breakers and accidents. $300k per fatality as expressed by Police, then a seperate unit would be cheap when we are already over $3million so far this year in the BOP alone as a result of fatals . Time for change !.

Cheaper than a life also, that simple thing just does not seem to register with some, perhaps a bicycle would be in order.

Yes,I have also noted Courier Drivers and Truck delivery drivers talking on cell phones while driving and today a Taxi Cab driver with a newspaper spread out accross his steering wheel reading while he veered accross over the white centre line. Yes increase the demerit points ASAP as its the only way people will learn as they will have No drivers licence.

Lawless roads

My opinion of a lot of drivers in The Bay of Plenty is they dont care less about the rules of the road and the lack police enforcement on the roads.

NAIL THEM FOR FLOUTING THE LAW

Follow West Australia. Texting while driving incurs 3 demerit points and $250 instant fine.
