Fault forces emergency landing

A faulty landing light caused an Air New Zealand aircraft to make an emergency landing at Tauranga Airport overnight.

Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade were called to the airport about 6.30pm after reports of the Air New Zealand Bombardier Q300's faulty gear.

A SunLive reporter who was at the scene says firefighters could be seen talking with Air NZ staff on the tarmac but no further action was taken.

Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade station officer Roger Pickett says the firefighters were called as a precaution after reports of the mechanical failure.

'We were the local standby but the plane landed safely,” explains Roger.

It is not known how many people were onboard or where it was flying to.
