Football kicks off at Fergusson

Netting 34 goals in two matches is an impressive feat by any football standards but Otumoetai Women's Football coach John Hodgson is expecting more of the same this afternoon.

Today, the side hosts Whakatane Town Women's side in round three of the Bay of Plenty Women's competition, riding high early on in the season.

In the opening two matches of the season, Otumoetai have scored a whopping 34 goals and conceded none.

After thrashing Edgecumbe Plains Rangers 18-0 the side backed this up with a 16-0 victory away to Rotorua United to sit top of the standings.

Rotorua United Women's, Papamoa FC Women's, and Whakatane Town Women's all have clean starts to the season as well but pale in comparison when it comes to goal difference – Rotorua the next best with 20.

Otumoetai Women's Football coach John Hodgson is pleased with the side's start to the season, and is calling for the side to continue playing its attacking brand of football.

'We expect Whakatane to be a tougher game but I'm still expecting the team come away with the win and maintain our status at the top of the competition.

'We have started the season really well and we have a strong squad with a good mix of older players and good solid younger players.”

Hodgson says Whakatane and Rotorua are sides Otumoetai have pinpointed as stiff competition this season and isn't discounting Papamoa either.

'We are definitely looking forward to it [today's match] and can't wait to sink our teeth into a really competitive match.”

The match is underway at Ferguson park this afternoon.
