Retirement villages are worth it

RE: ‘Village living costs' (The Weekend Sun, April 24). This letter by John O'Rourke needs a reply.
The fact that shareholders make a profit is not a bad thing. Indeed, it is a business but without the villages old people would remain in their large, cold empty homes, scared to turn on the heaters in lots of cases and lead lonely lives.
A retirement village is not an investment but one is buying a lifestyle with companionship and security and many more things. The only ones who stand to lose money are the children but isn't that money better spent on the retirees themselves? After all, they are the ones who worked for it.I live in a retirement village and I knew what I was getting into and I have not regretted it for one day.
