Teen arrested for charity theft

An 18-year-old woman has been arrested for the theft of a charity bucket for Nepalese earthquake victims taken from the Central City Backpackers in Tauranga yesterday.

The bucket contained less than $15 which had been donated to the Nepal relief effort.

The 18-year-old was clearly seen stealing the donations bucket thanks to CCTV footage.

A warning was issued via media yesterday after fears the woman would use the bucket to con people into giving her more money.

This morning police arrested a 'person of interest” for the theft of the charity bucket.

Sergeant Ben Gallagher says police would like to thank members of public for their interest and assistance in identifying the person responsible.

'A local 18-year-old female has been bailed to appear in the Tauranga District Court,” says Ben.

... to see a young person (or anybody, really) resorting to such a despicable crime. It's indicative of an attitude, and attitudes are shaped by family and the community we live in. I hope this girl gets to think about what she did and changes her mind about it. I lived in Nepal for some time and they are amongst the kindest people in the World. Maybe if this girl gets to see real poverty she might realize how lucky she is to be living here. After being in Bangladesh I get a bit tired of people here pleading "poverty" as an excuse for crime. This crime disrespects the generosity of other people and the girl concerned needs to realize it is no way for her to live.

Send her to Nepal to help with the clean up. People in NZ think they are hard done by, let them see how the other half live. The amount spent on our legal system with no consequences, could be used to really make dishonest people 'think'.
