Wet weather to pass

After a wet and windy start to the week, sunshine is set to make a welcome return by the time the weekend rolls around.

Monday and Tuesday saw an area of low pressure move across New Zealand, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to many areas.

'There is still a bit of the wet stuff around for the next couple of days, but the trend is for fine weather to dominate by the end of the week,” says MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey.

'All the main centres have seen a decent dumping of rain, with parts of Wellington receiving over 50mm since midnight on Sunday.

'Northerly wind gusts also reached over 100 km/h around Auckland's harbours on Monday night.”

As the low moves away to the east today, it leaves behind a cooler southwest airflow with showers still affecting many areas.

Tauranga, the Coromandel and Eastern Bay of Plenty are all forecast to see the occasional shower dry up by Thursday morning, with fine periods and highs of 19 degrees to push through until next Monday.

The Metservice expect the south-westerly winds to strengthen during Wednesday, with the strongest winds expected around the southern coast of the South Island between Bluff and the Otago Peninsula.

A Severe Weather Watch has been issued for exposed parts of Southland, Otago and Banks Peninsula, as well as Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa between Masterton and Napier.

Clear skies and colder temperatures across central parts of the South Island will once again bring the risk of some cold and frosty starts this week.

Temperatures around the North Island's central plateau are also likely to drop down this week, with some chilly nights expected towards the weekend.

The showers should disappear from most places later in the week as a high in the Tasman Sea approaches, moving over the country this weekend.

'It's looking like a fine weekend and a fine start to May for most of New Zealand,” adds Stephen.
