Woman struck by train critical

A Tauranga woman is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after being struck by a train on Ngatai Rd in Bellevue overnight.

A Tauranga woman who was struck by a train overnight remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Police say the woman was struck by a train about 8.30pm on Sunday. She was taken to Tauranga Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board communications manager Diana Marriot says a 48-year-old Tauranga woman is in a critical but stable condition in a hospital ward.

Tauranga and Mount Maunganui fire brigades attended. Tauranga Fire Brigade senior station officer Mark Keller says firefighters were needed to light up the scene for police using their special lighting units.

'We weren't needed except for lighting. They had the person out from under the train when we got there. They [fire crews] were there for a couple of hours.”

Investigations into how the incident occurred are continuing. Police were unavailable for comment this morning.

The incident occurred near Chevron Drive, near where a person was killed after being hit by a train in August 2012.
