Train strikes woman, Ngatai Rd

UPDATED 2.55AM MONDAY: A woman has life-threatening injuries after being struck by a train near Ngatai Road in Tauranga.

Police say a female pedestrian was struck by a train at around 8.30pm Sunday.

Emergency services are investigating how the woman ended up under the middle of the train. The female believed to be in her 40's was transfered to hospital with life threatening injuries.

A SunLive reporter at the scene says the incident is near Chevron Drive. The train had stopped on the tracks. Fire service and a lighting crew assisted with the investigation.

Ngatai Road is open to traffic.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

The scene is close to a pedestrian tunnel, connecting Ngatai Road with Meadowland St in Matua. It is about a kilometre west of a controversial pedestrian access over the tracks that connects Ngatai Road with Seaway Terrace, which has recently been closed by Kiwirail, due to safety concerns.
