A 20-year-old Hamilton man is in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital's high dependency unit after sustaining burns while adding petrol to a fire at Athenree.

St John Ambulance staff administered treatment to the man at the scene at Athenree, before transporting him to the sports field in Waihi for pick up by the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter about 6pm on Saturday.
A rescue helicopter spokesperson says the man was then flown to Waikato Hospital with serious burns to his arms and legs.
