One person has died following a fatal crash near Whakatane overnight.

Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 30 at Awakeri, near Kope Drain Rd, shortly after 9pm on Saturday night.
Serious crash investigators attended the scene. The road was closed and will be for some time, say police. Diversions are in place.
No details on the deceased will be released until next of kin are located and advised.
