A peculiar poppy in Tauranga

There's heaps of ways to commemorate Anzac Day with a poppy – the traditional pin-on, knitted ensembles or mass walls of the blood-red flower on display everywhere.

But one Tauranga family has a unique poppy to pay tribute to the lives lost in World War I sitting right on their table – and it's all the way from England.

Rod and Sue Collins have one of the 888,246 ceramic poppies which were placed around the Tower of London last year from August 5-November 11.

Sue and Rod's daughter Jodi Collins who lives in London pre-purchased two of the special poppies for the display around the British tower – with every flower representing one of the fallen in WWI.

'They are very, very special,” says Sue. 'Each one was individually hand-made.”

Sue doesn't believe many have made their way to NZ 'but I do know the Prime Minister's got one”.

'When he went to England they gave him one – I thought ‘well I've got one too'.”

Sue says her daughter is very patriotic and interested in the history of the Anzacs. 'My father was in WWII but I don't who of the family were in WWI. But our daughter has been to Gallipoli – she's just very interested in this.”

The ceramic poppies around the tower had to be pre-purchased for about £25 each.

'She bought two – one for herself and one for us.”

'The poppies weren't planted until bought – and there was only 888,246 – to represent the fallen and they all sold.”

As for how the Collins family will use the poppy to honour this Anzac Day, Sue says: 'I've got it in a vase on top of the table near the TV”.

'It's on view all of the time – along with the paperwork that goes with it.”

'It's something that is very unique.”

How come John Key has one of these poppies? It belongs to all of us if he was given it as NZ's PM. Where is it now?

I too have one of the poppies from the Tower of London. I was a volunteer there last year and helped plant some of the poppies. It was very special and an experience that I will never forget.
