Critical pedestrian transferred

A 31-year-old Tauranga man struck by a car on Takitimu Drive last night is in a critical condition in Waikato Hospital.

The man was transferred by helicopter at 3am this morning. He is currently under the trauma team's care in the hospital's intensive care unit.

The man was struck by a car shortly before 8pm last night while he was walking across the expressway near the 15th Avenue overbridge.

Tauranga police say the man was struck by a car heading south at 7.55pm as it rounded a moderate bend.

'His family have been notified and are with him at the hospital,” says Tauranga Police senior sergeant Shannon Clifford.

Takitimu Drive was closed and diversions were put in place onto Waihi Road before the road was re-opened before midnight.

A Police serious crash officer attended the scene and diversions were in place for all east bound traffic along Station Road.

Tauranga Fire Service supplied lighting while the scene examination took place.
