The driver was heading south at 7.55pm when he rounded a moderate bend near the 15th Avenue overbridge, and struck the man, says Tauranga Police senior sergeant Shannon Clifford.

Takitimu Drive was closed and diversions were put in place onto Waihi Road. The road was re-opened before midnight.

A Police serious crash officer attended the scene and diversions were in place for all east bound traffic along Station Road. Tauranga Fire Service supplied lighting while the scene examination took place.

Police are seeking any witnesses to the crash and anyone with information should contact Tauranga Police on (07) 577 4300 or alternatively anonymously on crimes stoppers 0800 555 111.

But, as far as I am aware, there are no totally obvious signs indicating that cyclists and pedestrians are not permitted on Takitimu Drive and its associated roads.

Was a matter of time

There are many people who cross the expressway at that point, jumping the concrete barriers and in some cases bringing their bikes with them. Can be a tight squeeze when you're 2 trucks wide and come around the corner to find someone waiting with their bike to get across. Perhaps a pedestrian overbridge in this area needs to be installed.

It's called COMMONSENSE. Surely people don't need signs to tell them obvious dangers. What next - a 'Don't walk in front of bus' sign on every Tauranga road?

Enlighten me

If people read the road code it says you can't walk on an expressway or motorway, unless on a dedicated facility. Hence no need for more signs! I would think this is common sense to know this...caveman!
