Police say a male driver of one car died and a man and woman from the other vehicle are reported to have sustained minor injuries.

Hauraki Road has been closed between SH2 and Wharepoa Road.

Police say the closure will only affect local traffic.

District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace, says: 'The most tragic aspect of the situation is it appears to have been entirely avoidable.

'The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance at the scene working to establish the cause of the crash.

'At this stage initial indications are a northbound Nissan Sentra newspaper delivery vehicle has been driven on the wrong side of the road and collided with a southbound Holden Commodore sedan.

'Tragically, the driver of the Nissan was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

'Given the two occupants of the Commodore were restrained and suffered status three injuries, it is possible had the driver of the Nissan been restrained, his injuries may have been survivable.”

Freda says the two occupants of the Commodore were taken to Thames Hospital by ambulance.

'Sadly, this morning's fatality is the 18th in the Waikato so far this year,” she adds, 'and it is not the first in which the lack of secure car restraints played a factor in the loss of someone's life.

'It only takes a couple of seconds to make it click. Road safety is no accident, and if we can remove the avoidable aspects in our crashes we can all drive to survive.”

Police priorities

Perhaps Police should review their priorities to focus on the real causes of accidents rather than wasting so much time and effort on 4 km/h speed tolerances etc. When was the last time you were stopped to check that your car was sound, seat belts being worn and licence current ?
