Hitchhiker hit by van

UPDATED 2.03PM: Te Puke's Jellicoe Street has now fully reopened after a female hitchhiker was left in a serious condition in Tauranga Hospital after being struck by a van while walking along a grass verge.

Emergency services were called to Jellicoe Street, near the intersection of Oroua Street, Te Puke about 11.52am following the crash.


Police investigating the scene of a crash where a woman was seriously injured.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says a 29-year-old Asian woman had been walking on the grass verge when an eastbound van struck her.

Both the woman, who suffered serious injuries, and the driver of the van have both been taken to Tauranga Hospital.

The elderly driver is suspected to be have suffered a medical condition, according to police.

Ian says the serious crash unit is currently investigating the accident and diversions are in place for all eastbound traffic along Station Road.

Motorists are asked to be patient and to expect delays.

Police are seeking any witnesses to the crash and anyone with information should contact Tauranga Police on (07) 577 4300.

Emergency services are currently rushing to the scene of a crash after a pedestrian was hit by a car in Te Puke.

One person is believed to have sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash on Jellicoe Street.

Motorists are being asked to drive with care in the area.
