BOP MP backs benefit reforms

A 'hand up” rather than a 'hand out” is being lauded as the catalyst for more than 200 Western Bay of Plenty people moving off benefits in the last 12 months.

Figures in the March 2015 quarter, compared to 2014, show there are 250 less people on the benefit system in the Western Bay – part of a nationwide drop in numbers.

Nationally, there were 284,260 people on benefit at the end of the March 2015 quarter, a drop of 11,060, or 3.7 per cent, compared to a year ago. The figures are the lowest since March 2009.

Sole parents are the most successful beneficiary group with a drop of 7.2 per cent (5,471) in the last year.

They are improvements that Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller has applauded, given that the Western Bay is helping to contribute to this positive decline.

'When National came to power the welfare system was failing kiwis,” says Todd, 'and 12 per cent of our working-age population was receiving a benefit.

'With the number of New Zealanders on benefits continuing to track downwards, I am pleased to say National's welfare reforms are working.”

Moving from welfare into work means a better life, better opportunities, and a brighter future for Bay of Plenty people and their families, adds Todd.

However, he says there is still work to be done and the government is continuing to help people into work by making childcare assistance, training, workplace support and access to health and disability support services available.

'This government is making a difference by setting expectations, and providing a hand-up rather than a hand-out to empower those wanting to work,” he says.

This time of year the WEstern Bay has heaps of seasonal work. That is the cause of the decline in benefit payouts. Trust National to put their own slant on things. There reforms are causing more poverty than ever. They just close their eyes to it. (I'm not a beneficiary by the way, but I see what's happening to families with very little)

I expected, coming from an established kiwifruit orchard background, you would account for seasonal work....

You're quite correct

"freedomkiwis". Anyone that goes anywhere near the backpackers around town will notice the advertising of "Seasonal work" for those staying!! WHY??? It couldn't possibly be because it is easier to stay at home with your hand out, than to get up in the morning and go to work, could it? I condemn those that argued against "Work for the dole" schemes in the past. The employment problems don't just go away, the thought processes behind expecting free money just get more intensely ingrained. Some people expect "Peak oil" I expect to get to a point where there are more bludgers than workers, well before peak oil.

on the benefit

The new way of collecting tolls on route k has just put more people on a benefit, and their wages were a pittance.

not suprising

So with all this seasonal work available NOBODY should be out of work. CUT THE DOLE DURING KIWIFRUIT SEASON. I hate bludgers! Plenty of truck driving jobs about too. We are screaming out for drivers at the moment.

Go and get it!

There needs to be a total reset for all benefits/hand-outs and genuine reasons to receive assistance. There is a ton of seasonal work available that is being taken up by new immigrants and tourists. Kiwi unemployed people need to at least give this kind of work a go, I know it is not for everyone but surely it must give a person a bit on self worth and or mana by going to work daily.

Technological Unemployment

Making it harder to get benefits isn't fixing the problem. In fact, in the next 10 years, unemployment will continue to be on the raise thanks to Technological Unemployment. Its probably the biggest issue for the 'normal' operation of society. Work is becoming harder and harder to find. The only solution to prevent massive poverty (like 50% of the population by 2030) is to move to something like Universal Basic Income. We also have to remove the idea that we need to work in order to get money. That idea has been successfully implanted into the public's minds by the power elite. We need to change that because the reality is, 90% of the public will not need to work in about 20 years time.

Money for nothing

@Conzar: Money is simply a method of voluntary exchange for goods or services and not implanted by some power elite. However the UBI is something dreamt up and implanted into the minds of those who believe they have an un-earned right to something created by others. The UBI sounds like some communist dream to me, and we all know (or maybe not!) how well communism worked.
