Medical incident at sea

UPDATED 7.05PM: One person is being brought back to shore after suffering a medical incident out at sea.

It's understood the person was one of two crew on board a catamaran, Superbird to Cruz, sailing between Waihi and Whangamata when they fell ill.

A operation was launched and two ambulance officers boarded a coastguard boat to provide immediate medical attention to the patient.

It's understood the person is now being brought back into Anzac Bay where further medical assistance is being called for.

Superbird to Cruz was the catamaran which capsized during the Auckland to Tauranga race at Easter weekend. Read more here.

The catamaran itself is believed to have suffered engine troubles, but it's unclear if it will be towed back to shore tonight or not.

A sailing cat in the water between Waihi and Whangamata had to call for a tow this evening following engine troubles.

A Tauranga Coastguard spokesperson says an ambulance has also been called for one of the two people on board who has fallen ill.

The operation, which involves Waihi Coastguard and Tauranga Coastguard, is being co-ordinated by Waikato Police.

It's understood the boat is being towed back into shore and medical treatment is being given to the ill person.
