Mayor “honoured” to attend memorial

Mayor Stuart Crosby is representing Tauranga City at the official Pukeahu National War Memorial Park opening in Wellington today.

Stuart says the memorial was a place for all New Zealanders to commemorate those who have served our country during times of war.

Tauranga City Council Mayor Stuart Crosby is at the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park opening in Wellington today.

'Pukeahu Park is a place of enormous national significance and a fitting way to honour the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, as well as their families and descendants.

'New Zealand is a small nation, yet we have consistently contributed to world peace at huge expense – and I am grateful for the opportunity to represent the people of Tauranga at this national event.”

Stuart says the opening was particularly poignant in light of the upcoming 100-year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.

'On Anzac Day, we acknowledge the sacrifice, contribution and suffering of all those who have served and died for our country in times of war, and it is fitting that we have such a remarkable monument at which to pay our respects.

'In Tauranga, we will mark the occasion with the first combined Mount Maunganui RSA and Tauranga RSA civic service at the Tauranga Domain, starting at 9.45am.

'The joint service is a strong reminder of the importance of community as we stand together to honour the ANZAC spirit forged on those foreign battlefields so many years ago.”

Pukeahu National War Memorial Park has been under construction for the past two and a half years and has involved hundreds of groups and individuals.

It's the New Zealand Government's key legacy project to mark the First World War centenary.
