Underpass work set to start

Contractors are gearing up to build Tauranga's Maungatapu underpass, with preliminary works set to start this month ahead of full construction.

The underpass will be built on State Highway 29 and is part of NZTA's Hairini Link project, focussing on reducing congestion and boosting safety as traffic volumes in the area increase.

Once finished, the underpass will deliver a two lane road underneath the Maungatapu roundabout, which will connect directly to Welcome Bay Road.

In addition toreducingtraffic congestion at peak times, it will make travel safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists.

Construction is set to start in September 2015 and the project is expected to take three years to complete.

NZTA's Bay of Plenty highways manager Niclas Johansson says people will notice some activity around the site from this month as contractor Fulton Hogan begins preliminary works.

'Fulton Hogan Ltd was awarded the contract to design and build the Maungatapu underpass late last year,” confirms Niclas.

'They have carried out detailed geotechnical work on the site over the past month and will now begin preliminary works to prepare the site for construction to begin.”

'The preliminary work includes clearing vegetation, installing drains to help keep the site dry when work starts, and removing eight houses from Hammond Street.”

A number of environmental control systems, such as silt screens to prevent run off into waterways, will also be put in place over the next few weeks and a temporary road to give residents and contractors access to Hammond Street will be built.

Niclas says a public open day will be held in late July to give people the opportunity to find out more about the project and how it will improve safety and congestion in Tauranga.

The exact date of the open day will be advertised in the coming months.

Caveman quite rightly points out the hypocrisy of our roading authorities, again demonstrating the total lack of commitment in regards the provision of 'safe off-highway' cycling, as evidenced on the $455 million Eastern Arterial. A small increase in width to accommodate a separation barrier would have been very cost effective and responsible, now impossible!

TURRET ROAD

It is good to see the 'underpass' going ahead at long last. Not going to relieve congestion though. What happens when traffic reaches the 2 lane bridge and 2 lane Turret road ! Both need to be 4 lane - but how do they widen Turret road?? Bet they won't cut down the pohutukawas!!

Improve traffic flows?

That is a joke, all it is going to do is create a $50m holding pen for cars in the morning, somewhere to park until the three lanes can merge into one to get over the Harini Causeway. Nothing else will be achieved until the road widening is also completed through to Cameron Road. Sadly TCC are going to have to pay for that but because they are completely broke that means it is not going to happen for at least 30 years.

Waste of time and money ...

WOFTAM, unless the entire project is completed as PM Key promised to do. Word has it that NZTA are not doing the widening of: Causeway, Turret, 15th Ave. Because of that the tunnel is a complete and utter waste of time as nothing at all will be achieved from the $50m odd spent, this is a typical case of TCC interfering in the NZTA road spend and messing up a good thing well and truly. This is not the fault of NZTA/Key/Bridges, it is the fault of TCC officials badgering NZTA with some Muppet brain scheme to get rid of Route K debt and tolls revenue, somehow that is better than a bill on the slate for $45m (in 2008 costs), it just does not figure ... what a complete crazy decision to allow NZTA to do this and "walk away".
