Kestrel heads north

Tauranga’s iconic Kestrel ferry is on its way to Auckland. It departed at about 6.30am on Tuesday after spending six years docked in Tauranga’s CBD.

The Kestrel leaving Tauranga on Tuesday morning.

The ferry was purchased by the newly formed Kestrel Preservation Society.

It is being towed to Auckland where the boat will become a feature of the city’s waterfront.

Two tugboats were needed to tow the Kestrel out of Tauranga harbour.

One of the tugboats only towed it out of the harbour entrance, while the other will tow it to Auckland.

It is estimated the journey to Auckland will take about 30 hours.

The Kestrel Preservation Society is hugely impressed at the lengths former owner Mark Scapens has gone to to maintain the Kestrel’s originality and overall physical condition during his eight year ownership.

This will contribute enormously to future restoration and maintenance, according to the society.

Anyone interested in supporting the Kestrel can contact Kestrel Preservation Society at PO Box 171, Warkworth.

Sorry Murray Guy but I would have to disagree with you as I was the real estate sales agent acting for the sale of the ’Kestrel’ Business and Boat and would advise you of the following. I had serious interest from a highly respected Tauranga hospitality operator who was prepared and committed to purchasing the Boat and Business but after a meeting with your council representatives were advised the licence to occupy would not be extented beyond its 2013 expiry date as their was no place for it in the new waterfront plans. Hence the business operation had no future viability with such a short time frame left on the mooring licence. What a sad day for Tauranga waterfront to loose such an iconic piece of New Zealand maritime history! Bring it back Mr Guy.

Glad she is going home

I spent many, many hours of my youth on the Kestrel and Toroa. The game of trying to hide from the deckie on arrival at Auckland to avoid paying the fare was fun. It was soooo wrong to take her away from there. I am glad the boat wasn’t messed up too much and wish the new owner all the very best in their new venture. Taking an icon from one city to another just doesn’t work.

Not Council's Prob

I am as shocked as anybody, but for once I am in complete agreement with Cr. Guy. Big business gamble didn’t work out, moneybags owner moans that it’s someone else’s fault, diddums, next project.

Council 100% to blame ???

Posted on 01-12-2010 09:28 | By murray.guy

I realise I should know if there is any validity in accusations that Council is to blame, but to say TCC is 100% to blame, beggers belief. Scapens asked TCC for the provision of services to his mooring point to carry out a business venture. Agreement is reached. TCC provides the services, meets it’s obligations. The business fails. Scapens, for reasons never divulges to elected members, chooses to sell the boat. How is TCC 100% to blame?

All I can say is Haere Ra to the Kestrel and I am going to miss the its majestic sight at the pontoon... I am pleased it is going somewhere where she will be appreciated. Kudos to the Kestral Preservation Society whomever you are. She is gorgeous.

its a sad sight to see the ’Kestrel’ towed back to Auckland, so much care was taken with restoration and many dollars spent. Not an owner issue, council 100% to blame I believe. May she have a new lease of life in her original home.

why?

The full picture/politics haven’t been fully explained but what a sad sight. Is it greed on the owner, or council resulting in the Kestrels return to Jaffa town or maybe its position didnt fit in with forward thinking councillors future plans (joke)? The food was great on a beautiful boat with fantastic views.

good luck kestrel
