Tauranga Moana is Awesome II

With the arrival of Autumn, the days are getting shorter, the nights are getting cooler and, as the sun starts to leave us over the coming weeks, so does much of the wildlife that frequents the waters around our city.

The last four months have been exceptional, with warm days, lots of sunshine and some remarkable encounters with marine life which, for me, often vary in species from season to season.

During last Summer, I made the original version of this video - ‘Tauranga Moana is Awesome' - which showcased some of my many encounters with various species of marine life during the summer.

From sharks to rays to orcas, little did I know at that time that it would become the video that really put Tauranga on the map as far as wildlife in our inner harbour goes.

With over 8,600 shares on Facebook, and having been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people from both here and around the world, it became a centrepiece for the natural beauty that surrounds our city.

Just as importantly, it has since allowed me to give talks at local schools and functions to educate others on the importance of our harbour, and the need to look after it.

‘Tauranga Moana is Awesome II' is the sequel to that video, and as well as filming in the harbour, I wanted to leave the harbour and venture out into deeper water in the hope of finding other species of life. And boy did I find them!

One thing I love about kayaking, or boating, or even just walking along the shoreline is that more often than not, I will see something, such as the stingray in Pilot Bay or the Eagle ray off Tauranga.

This proves that we really don't need to travel great distances to educate our kids on what is around the Bay. How lucky are we to have it all on our doorstep?

With many, many encounters that I was fortunate enough to have, both on my kayak and off it, here is a culmination of some of the highlights from those adventures. While some of the main characters from last season are not present (like orcas and octopus), others are able to have their moment to shine.

While the orcas did elude me, I take comfort knowing that this is the best thing about nature - that we can't control it, and that it is on their terms. For me, that is what makes it all the more exciting. That is what makes it an adventure.

What you are about to watch is the last four months crammed into four minutes! I hope you enjoy my video, and thanks for watching.
