$1k scholarship for rising young voice

He might be one of the youngest members of the Scholars Pro Musica Chamber Choir, but that certainly doesn't phase 16-year-old Taylor Moffat.

In-fact he's relishing the opportunity to perform with a hugely regarded choir and to be rubbing shoulders with singers who have decades of experience under their belts.

This year the Papamoa College student won a scholarship with chamber choir who performs choral period works, with a particular focus on the baroque period.

For his scholarship Taylor receives regular vocal tuition from artistic and musical director Chalium Poppy, full membership to the choir at the end of the year plus $1,000 to put in his back pocket.

'I love it,” says the Year 12 bass singer. 'I'm feeling good about my musical abilities, they're improving pretty quickly.

'You don't feel like it's everyone for themselves, if people see you having trouble they offer you help, it's like a really great harmony.”

He popped up on the choir's through the college's vocal coaching group which is run by Tauranga based singer and teacher Jan Beets.

Taylor is one of four choir members who attends the college – it just happens the other three are teachers which includes Learning Area Music Coordinator Katrina Wickham.

'He was really thrown in the deep end the first day,” says Katrina. 'Taylor was straight into it and working on quite complex music.

'To have a choir that performs at a high level like the Scholar Pro Musica, and then to have a young student as well singing at the level is something you wouldn't usually experience unless.”

Taylor adds: 'Sometimes when you finish rehearsal, which usually go for two-hours, you feel like you've just been to the gym and had a full-on workout.”

The Scholars are currently rehearsing for their May which includes a performance of Mozart's Requiem – Taylor's favourite piece and one he's discovered recently.

He confesses to not being much of a 'musical intellectual” but through the choir he's learned a lot about that period in music.

'As we've been singing the piece, it's sounds just so powerful. It's really cool, I just love that ‘oomph' and the intensity we're able to achieve.”

While singing has been mainly a hobby for Taylor he does admit that the idea of pursuing it fulltime has crossed his mind, but he wouldn't want to rely on it.

But with that said, he's definitely going to pursue his passion further so it could be a case of 'watch this space.”

'I definitely don't want to leave it in the corner to gather dust because quite simply I just love singing.”
