Appeal for designated dog park

A group of dog owners are on a mission to have a dog park designated somewhere in Tauranga.

Around 47 dogs and their owners meet at Yatton Park this morning to show support for a submission put to Tauranga City Council for a local dog park.

Dog lovers Alyssa Tuck, 11, with Neo, Taylor Hermond, 8, with Bob, and Zoe Tocker, 13, with fudge.

Tauranga Dog Park committee member Mel Osborn says the submission is to put up a fully fenced dog park.

Mel says their objective about today's meeting is about getting their message out to the public that a dog park is needed in Tauranga.

'We have a few ideas of where a park should go. It's up to us to submit those places to council to see whether or not they think it is the right place.

'At the moment we are looking very closely at Judea Park, and everyone else has other areas: the reserve opposite Fraser Cove, Faulkner Park.”

Mel says in their biggest dreams they would love an area that the dogs could do agility.

'Fully looked after by council, so we would like to have bins for people to pick up their poo.

And we would also like an area so that the dogs could go for a swim.

'I'm from Christchurch and there are nine dog parks down there.” The submission is still in its early stages but Mel says they have had contact from the council asking for more research on where they think the park should go.

'Once they have all the research, they will go from there.”

People can show their support by signing a petition here.

Alyssa Tuck, 11, with Neo. Neo is up for adoption, contact: Eva's Animal Resq.

Somewhere to take the dogs and kids, best where your willies as the doo-doo will be more prolific than the grass.

Mid Seventies !!

For those that are not old enough, the large flat area (now a weed garden) was actually a Soccer ground that was the home of the JUNIOR teams from Greerton Rovers when I was there - mid to late 60's - I played there for a number of years. Then some bright b......rd from the council decided thathat it would better as a 'garden' - and yeas thee is a park just down the road, but Yatton Park was a great sports for kids and now the council is going to turn it into a dog park !!!! What happened to their sporting facilities ..............

You might be surprised . Most times owners will pick up their dogs do-do. especially if other people are out and about. I find it just as disgusting when people spit on the ground Yuk!

Well

I don't think dog owners can't read signs. From the police station on Pilot Bay right down and around Adams Ave and Main beach is NO DOG. But I see them everyday.

Don't forget cat, budgie and gerbil parks too

While the ratepayers are being asked to cater for man's best friend including a swimming pool, for the sake of fairness and equity we need to look at fully looked after council facilities for other pet owners too. I've always felt a large cage like structure where budgie owners can walk freely with their birds was essential in a modern city. An olympic size pool for enabling gerbil fanciers to swim with their fish is also desirable. A special cat forest park with plastic birds may also help socialise cats, their owners and wildlife. A cat sauna for cats to relax after would be good also. Now if Christchurch has all these dog parks, we must of course jump to attention and provide them too??? Ummm.

that you are yogi, I always wear my "willie" and it never gets anywhere near Doo doos!!!!, and I have to ask, does a bear always s**t in the woods, or sometimes does a park suffice if you are caught short?, as you must be because you are full of it!!!!.

Dog Agility

Posted on 06-04-2015 08:34 | By milliedog

Dont aprreciate the word Agility being used in the explanation fir needing this park. Im am a paying Agility club member who trains under very strict rules that govern our competitive sport. Most of these rules have to do with dog safety and well being. We have alot of club members who both compete or just come to have fun and with there dogs. We are registered with the NZ Kennel club we also use council grounds of which we pay a large amount for and have to work alot with them under strict conditions , these are not fenced dog parks. There are 2 clubs in Tga , Tauranga Dog Training Club and Mount Agility check the sites out.

Yatton Park

is a beautiful park for young and old to enjoy but with lots of dogs racing around it becomes dangerous. Leave yatton for the young one and it is such a beautiful spot for picnics. I have given up my walks at Yatton because there are to many dogs racing around. Please no dogs at Yatton.

Doggy fun

Dog parks are a great idea. We live in a small town, there is fenced dog parks with dog shaped bins to place doggy doos also a cylinder with plastic bags to use if you have not got yours. Dogs get socialisation and play in a confined area. Our dog comes home happy and tired after a run around and I have not had to worry about vehicles and him disturbing other people on the street.

A dog park at your peril

Posted on 14-04-2015 20:50 | By Murray.Guy

At this time bylaws that restrict our activities with our dogs are quite liberal and the 'dog haters, the intolerant', that constantly bleat about mountains of largely non-existent dog faeces on footpaths and reserves will jump at the chance to restrict all dogs to an obscure park and ban everywhere else. Beware what you ask for, it may bite you.

Doggy doo doo?

Posted on 24-04-2015 16:00 | By YOGI BEAR

So will that mean that there will be "Doggy" doodoo toilets also, you know like the ones on TV? On the carton shows they have dogs using the toilet, can we expect to have to pay for all that as ratepayers ... not in your nelly matey's.
