Saved by a ponga

An accident on Omanawa Road in the lower Kaimai Range left a vehicle precariously balanced over a 60-metre drop this morning.

A people-mover spun off the road and through a fence after taking a sharp bend around one kilometre from the intersection with State Highway 29.

The people mover was balanced over a 60-metre drop.

The vehicle then rolled about 50 metres down a gully on the side of the road and became snagged on a ponga tree fern.

Three of the four people travelling in the vehicle managed to free themselves, but the driver - a woman in her late 30s - was trapped inside as it hung dangerously over the drop.

She was later freed from the car and made her way up the bank, where she was met by police, the fire service and an ambulance.

One person was taken to Tauranga Hospital, but their injuries are not thought to be serious.
