Easter rain on the horizon

It looks like the Easter Bunny has more than just treats in his basket this week, with sunshine set to turn to rain over the long weekend.

The MetService forecasts a showery south-westerly feed of air is set to remain across the country today, bringing showers into western and southern parts.

A frontal system will weaken as it moves up the South Island, bringing a few showers to northern parts of the Alps in the afternoon and the odd shower to the east of the South Island.

The wet weather looks likely to miss the Bay of Plenty early on, with the south-west flow continuing over the country, maintaining some unsettled weather and scattered showers particularly in the west and south.

But it's later in the week - especially this weekend - when rain is forecast to set in.

'The weather leading up to the Easter holidays looks to be improving, with a broad area of high pressure building across New Zealand during the week,” says MetService meteorologist John Law.

'Temperatures will remain relatively mild this week, with light to moderate winds across much of the country.”

After the odd shower today and Wednesday, both Tauranga and Whakatane are predicted to get temperatures between 22 and 24 degrees along with long fine spells up until Friday.

Then from Saturday, through to the following Wednesday, it's showers and rain, according to the Metservice 10-day forecast.

Further north in the Coromandel it is not looking any more promising, with rain settling in from Saturday after fine spells and light winds throughout the week.

From mid-week the high builds across New Zealand while a low deepens south of the country, leading to strengthening westerly winds and an increased chance of showers over the lower South Island.

For Good Friday, weather across the North Island and eastern parts of the South Island is expected to improve with most places staying fine and dry.

Meanwhile, a westerly flow will continue to bring scattered showers to the western and southern South Island, especially around Fiordland.
