High honours in volleyball

With national titles and a number of top 10 finishes to their name, the Bay of Plenty has once again walked away from the New Zealand Secondary School Volleyball Nationals with wide ranging success.

At the end of the week-long tournament in Palmerston North, it is Rotorua's Western Heights High School flying the Bay flag after taking out the division one competition in comprehensive fashion.

The NZSS Volleyball nationals are the biggest secondary school indoor sports tournament in New Zealand, and this year boasted 155 teams from New Zealand and Australia, including 1900 players, 450 officials, and around 1000 supporters.

Facing Australia's Heathfield High School in the final, the Rotorua side won in three straight sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-20), ending Tauranga Boys' College's two-year run as champions.

Other Bay sides to finish strongly were Mount Maunganui College in third, Tauranga Boys College (fifth) and Otumoetai College (sixth).

Western Heights trio Billy Johnestone, Taiwere Morrison and Kahurangi Robinson (MVP) were selected in the NZSS national tournament team.

Other players to make the respective mens and womens NZSS national tournament teams were; IIsaiah Duncanson, Kahla Tyson, and Kelcy Ballantyne from Otumoetai College, Perry Preston and Casey Lewis of Mount Maunganui College and Tauranga Boys' College's Daniel Kilpatrick and Thomas Reid.

In the Girls' Division One competition, Christchurch's Burnside High School narrowly beat defending champions Waimea College Girls, with Otumoetai College back in third spot.

Tauranga Girls' College finished sixth and Mount Maunganui College 10th respectively.

In the Boys' Division Two competition, Whakatane High School took out top honours, with Te Puke High school finishing sixth.

In the corresponding girls' division, Bethlehem College made it a Bay of Plenty sweep, while Western Heights High School, Otumoetai College, Whakatane High School and Otumoetai College all ended up in the top 10.

Overall there were 25 top 10 placings by Bay of Plenty schools across 10 divisions.
