Free theatre in Katikati

Two free ‘Pint Sized' Plays are being presented by the Katikati Theatre Company at the Talisman Hotel tomorrow.

Artistic director Julie Thomas says these free shows are the company's gift to the community - especially for those locals who've not had the chance to catch any of their previous productions.

Tuesday sees the final performances of plays ‘Driving Mr Diddy'written by Mandy Bannon, and ‘A Load of Bull' written by Tony Cottrell.

Julie says it will be the second of two performances staged at the Talisman, with the first taking place on Tuesday last week.

'There were about 70 people, a mixture of bookings and walk-ins,” says Julie. 'We even had a number of people travel to Katikati just for the show, with some coming from Tauranga and Waihi.

'The audience were hugely positive and supportive. The amount of people I spoke to who said the whole evening had been enjoyable for them was brilliant.”

Julie says ‘Driving Mr Diddy',directed by Elisabeth Beamish, is performed by Barry Magowan, Sean Goode and herself.

The play follows couple Brian and Margaret's car trip to their line dancing class which they discover is more exciting than they expected.

While ‘A Load of Bull', directed by Francis Young, is the tale of two ladies who discuss the important issues of life, and is performed by Birgitte Anderson and Kirsty Warden.

'Both plays were specifically written to be performed in small venues like pubs,” adds Julie, 'with small casts and short running times of up to 15 minutes long.”

On top of being a gift to the community, Julie is hoping these two performances will inspire other curious Katikati locals to embrace their inner actor and try their hand at theatre.

They're not short on shows, and will undertake their fifth annual winter season of Dinner Theatre at Forte Leza in either late June or July.

Julie adds the company is also hoping to tell the story of well-known Katikati figure Dr Joe Burstein.

'This will hopefully happen,” she says. 'We want to call it ‘Dr Joe' and stage it as part of the Katikati Mural Festival.”

If you were hoping to book a table for Tuesday's performance, you're out of luck as it will be standing room only.
