State Highway 1 is currently closed south of Orari due to a serious crash involving a truck and car.
The driver of the car had been taken to Timaru hospital with serious injuries.
Police say the driver of the truck is uninjured but is badly shaken and being assessed at the scene.
Diversions are likely to remain in place for at least the next 2-3 hours.
Canterbury police urge the public to avoid the area if possible.
