Smash and bash at Baypark

A last minute motor rebuild didn't stop driver Dan Corrin from winning all three saloon car races at Baypark Family Speedway overnight.

'At lunchtime yesterday, his car was still in a million pieces,” says Baypark Family Speedway promoter Bernie Gillon. 'They had to rebuild the motor. So winning all three races was a great result for them.”

A total of 37 stock car drivers took to the terracotta track for the feature event – the Harry Fredrickson Stock Car Gold Cup – on Saturday night.

Despite a few last minute withdrawals, Bernie says the 37 entries still made up for a record number of stock cars to take to the Baypark track.

'It was really exciting racing with that many stock cars. There was lots of hits and lots of action and great entertainment.

'The stock cars were the feature event of the evening.”

The winner of the cup was local driver Ryan Hunt, with Caitlin Hayward in second and Gisborne driver James Kirk in third.

'The girls did really well,” says Bernie. 'Caitlin is the only woman driver in the stock car race at Baypark.”

The three saloon car races were won by Dan Corrin, followed by Brent McGlymont in second and local driver Michelle Wymer in third.

'Michelle has been a long time Baypark driver,” says Bernie. 'But this is probably her third meeting this season. So for her to get third was a great result.”

New Zealand based American Ricky Logan won the sprint car feature, while local driver James Dahm claimed second prize and Colin Entwhistle in third.

Bernie says they also completed the mini stock madness event that was rained off one month ago.

'We're looking forward to the SunLive Baypark Speedway Demolition Derby and FMX show in two weeks' time.”
