Mt Drury gum tree to be removed

Bay of Plenty locals will get the chance to stock up on firewood for the winter next week when Arborcare cuts down the remainder of a gum tree that fell over at the Mount Drury playground.

Limbs from the flowering gum fell onto the playgrounds slide at about 10.30pm on Sunday night.

The tree as it was found on Monday morning.

Council contractors Arborcare believes the failure is likely to be the result of root or root-plate damage a number or years or even decades ago.

The tree has been made safe and contractors will continue with its complete removal next week.

'All usable fire wood will be left onsite in rings and can be collected on a first in, first serve basis,” says parks and recreation team leader Joshua Trafford.

Any large and gnarly logs will be removed from the site.

The slide will remain closed until the tree has been stabilised and the structural integrity of the slide checked and approved.

Actually that will only be the case when it is cut down and is on the ground, then it is safe to walk on by again. Gum trees are "disintegration type trees, limbs fall off on a regular basis, normally smaller, large is rear.
