Tauranga makes TripAdvisor top ten

Tauranga has secured a top-ten spot on the list of travellers' chosen destinations throughout New Zealand.

The list, released by the world's largest travel site TripAdvisor, sees Tauranga claim tenth spot as part of their 2015 Travellers' Choice awards.

Queenstown was named as the top spot in the country, and ranked 22nd on the world-wide list ahead of the likes of Hong Kong, Dubai and Sydney.

The popular South Island tourist town came out on top of the NZ list, ahead of Auckland in second place and Blenheim in third.

Rotorua make it a Bay of Plenty double in the top ten, claiming fourth spot in front of Nelson, Taupo, Napier, Wanaka and Russell, who make up the remainder of the list.

Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions in destinations, gathered over a 12-month period.

Queenstown also took top spot for the entire South Pacific category, in front of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The adventure capital is joined by Auckland (7th), Blenheim (9th) and Rotorua (10th) on the list.

Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor, says: 'These world-class destinations chosen by our community are rich in history, culture and beauty and offer endless sights to explore.”

Topping the list of travellers' choice destinations in the world is Marrakech in Morocco, which sits ahead of Cambodia's Siem Reap and Turkish city Istanbul.

Last month, and for a third year in a row, Mount Main Beach in Mount Maunganui was voted New Zealand's best beach in a similar TripAdvisor poll.

The Mount was also named the second best beach in both Australia and New Zealand, and was voted the 25th-best in the world.

Tauranga's Visitor Rating

Surely Tauranga can do better than 10th spot to attract tourist dollars here instead of cruise liner visitors catching buses to Hobbiton or other destinations. Max Lewis, Mt Maunganui

Not a suprise

that Tauranga is only a 10 on the list. My son came up from the kapiti coast and asked "What's in Tauranga Dad?" answer was " Well son not a lot, you need to hop on a coach to Rotorua to see anything worth looking at in the BOP." Tauranga needs support for tourist ventures but sadly not likely to happen with the current entrenched attitudes of the TCC.

Hype

Some of these places are oversold and a bit disappointing to those who have been to them. I mean, Blenheim, seriously? Great wine region but a dull boring town. All the wineries require a car to visit them so no fun unless you want to drink drive. Don't go to Blenheim - get your Sav down the road at the supermarket.

For Tauranga to do better in keeping visitors here someone will need to invest money in attractions or activities. Maybe that someone is you? Of course it's a lot easier to suggest than actually do.
