30 years of service honoured

A man who gave 30 years of service to rugby in the Bay of Plenty has joined an honoured group of Bay of Plenty Rugby Union life members.

John Brophy of Whakatane was announced as the latest life member at the rugby union's annual general meeting – a fitting stage to honour his service and contribution to the game.

Brophy was humble in accepting the award, and recognised the support he has received over the decades.

'It means a lot for me,” he said, 'especially with the countless years I have put into rugby. With the help of everyone else, not only is it my award but it's for everyone else who has supported me over the years.”

But the Eastern Bay chairman has no plans of slowing down, and intends to continue his service to both rugby and the union.

'There is plenty in the future as far as I can see,” he added. 'There are some projects, some work in motion, and I would like to see these completed”.

Whakatane's Marist Rugby and Sports Club chairman Paul Singh says Brophy has unselfishly dedicated his spare time and interests to rugby throughout the Bay without any thought of personal gain or reward.

'He has followed BOP rugby in a devoted fashion at all levels,” said Paul. 'He has provided wise council to many administrators at club, sub-union and provincial level over the past 30 years.

'He has served the Bay of Plenty executive longer than any other current member of the board or administration personnel”.

Bay of Plenty Rugby Union chief executive Mike Rogers acknowledges Brophy's continued contribution to rugby, through the Eastern Bay and the union.

'John has served the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union since 1985, providing 30 years of service,” explained Mike.

'His dedication and support in the Eastern Bay of Plenty has been invaluable, especially with the merger of Rangitaiki sub-union into the Eastern Bay of Plenty Rugby sub-union.”

The AGM, held at ASB Arena, also saw a change in rugby directors on the board with Owen Cooney re-elected for a further two year term and Ray Watson newly elected to the Board.

'I am very pleased to have the opportunity to add my skills and experience to those of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union governance team. I'm humbled and grateful for the support of my nomination to the board from across the three sub unions” said Ray.
