Maori tattoo studio opens

A new traditional Maori tattoo studio is open in Tauranga. Te Rua Moko o Moana Moko is located in the Historic Village on 17th Avenue and opened for business on Friday.

The studio combines the old with the new and is fitted with modern and hygienic tattoo equipment and a gallery display of Maori artworks from a range of local and national artists.

Stu McDonald, a moko artist for 14 years, works on Tania Cotter's leg.

The opening of this studio is of particular significance to Moana Moko as it represents the turn of a 10 year dream-in-the-making to reality.

Director Pohe Luttenberger says 10 years ago he envisioned the studio with top Ta Moko artists.

Moana Moko director, Stuart McDonald, says the business will be guided and informed by Maori principles and values.

Moana moko is a moko whanau of 10 artists that affiliate to Tauranga.

The studio is currently taking registrations for their first ever Aotearoa International Ta Moko wananga (traditional Maori learning environment) to be held in Tauranga at the end of this month.
