Council admit bus stop blunder

A regional council u-turn on a Papamoa bus route has left users scratching their heads after a number of stops were removed without prior warning, leaving them unaware of where to catch their daily ride.

For the last four years, Paua Cove resident Dave Dickinson has been catching the BayBus Route 33 home from Willow Street, Tauranga through to Papamoa without fuss.

But on Friday he and fellow bus users were surprised to find recently added bus stops along Golden Sands Drive, Wairakei Avenue and Emerald Shores Drive removed just four months into a Bay of Plenty Regional Council route change.

Last December regional council 'slightly” tweaked Route 33 to include stops on the three Papamoa streets, as opposed to simply running along Papamoa Beach Road and Karewa Parade.

However, regional council confirms it has reverted back to its original route and road markings have been painted over - a move unbeknownst to residents, including Dave.

'There is a woman who I talk to on the bus who gets off outside the Four Square [On Golden Sands Drive],” says Dave, recalling Friday's bus ride.

'She pushed the buzzer like she normally does and the driver goes around the roundabout and doesn't stop.

'She says ‘hey you didn't stop', and he said ‘no, that one's gone now'.

When questioned, the bus driver said he was unaware of why the change had been made and couldn't tell passengers where the alternate stops were.

Dave previously got off the bus on Papamoa Beach Road, by Karewa Parade, before the new route allowed him to get off on Emerald Shore Drive, closer to home.

But with no explanation from the bus service, he was unsure where the new bus stops would be as he hadn't received word from the bus service or the regional council.

'At this stage no one knows anything - not even the bus drivers,” he says.

'Communication to both your drivers and your passengers seems to be a little less than optimal here.”

Regional council's transport policy manager Garry Maloney says based on public feedback, they have made the call to return Route 33 to its original route, which is along Papamoa Beach Road and Karewa Parade.

'We realised today that the existing bus stops have been removed a week early,” says Garry.

'We apologise for any confusion this has caused to passengers and will be working with the bus company to make sure all drivers are informed of the change.”

The change back to the pre-existing route will come into place from next Monday, March 23.

According to a statement on Baybus' website, the bus stops have already been removed by Tauranga City Council.

Get rid of regional council and councillors

We only need (and even that's open to debate) one council for Tauranga, not two. The regional council spends up large and I think wastes money on bureaucracy because people don't really know it exists. I ask the question, what do they pay these council people?

The left hand does not know where the right hand is !!

is where brain power comes to mind eg let 30/36 sweep papamoa 1st to say either plaza or Bayfair and make 33 an express direct down pap beach rd and in peak morning have 2 33s back to back one plaza bk to beach rd and the other bayfair, just to add council need new blood within TCC and BOP

We can't possibly agree with you there, your logic would SAVE ratepayers money and that just isn't done these days.

We are talking about a ratepayer funded service. To be brutally honest, it would be cheaper for ratepayers to give every household a book of taxi vouchers and have door-to-door service than to run empty buses for SIXTEEN hours of the day. Overheard one driver just yesterday saying that he had driven for ten hours and only taken twenty dollars!!

Got that right, the bonus would be that the wards in the regional Council would also get scrapped as well, that would mean a return to democracy, a much better plan.

How About Consulting Bus Users

Posted on 17-03-2015 15:40 | By Mommatum

As someone who relies on public transport, I'd like to know why users like myself and Dave in your story aren't consulted before these changes are made, never mind not even being informed until after the fact. Unlike Council's apologist Gerry to whom buses are simply are means to drawing a fat salary they are our way of remaining employed and connected, and I can fully empathise with Dave and others who caught their bus in good faith only to find it whisking past their stop without a by your leave. Maybe a pre requisite for jobs involving decisions about bus services. After all, if you haven't experienced something how can you make informed decisions about it? I wonder how Gerry and co would feel to walk outside one morning to find their cars gone, and a note left behind saying 'take a bus, travel a mile in our shoes'?

bus stop

Thats not the only one they stuffed up Recently they moved the bus stop from outside the Welcome Bay School and relocated it 200 mts further down the road.. It is now in a very dangerous place right on the inside of a left hand bend Drivers pulling out of this stop cant see traffic comminung down the hill behind them Seen several near misses already. Do these councilors ever go and see what is actually going to be done before giving the go ahead

Public feedback?

Posted on 17-03-2015 22:15 | By Sammymac

I'd like to know where they got their public feedback from? The bus stop on Wairakei avenue was far easier for my children too. Such a shambles that this has been changed and left people without a reliable basic route. Change it back is what I say and have done with it.
