A chemical-related explosion has been reported in Maungatapu.

SunLive understands that one person suffered burns after mixing swimming pool chemicals together.

The patient was treated by St John Paramedics and firefighters took care of any chemical residue at the scene.

Senior Station Officer Phil Price says: 'We got a call to an unknown explosion at an address in Taipari Street. We arrived to find that there'd been a small explosion involving pool chemicals, which is chlorine.

'An elderly gentleman had been mixing some chemicals for his swimming pool. The chemicals reacted in a bucket and there was a small explosion involving the chlorine.

'It has superficially burned his eyes and a small part of his face. The ambulance staff are treating him and our role was simply to make sure the chemicals were safe and to provide first aid until the ambulance arrived.

'His face was washed continually for about 15-to-20 minutes with water.

'The chemicals involved are very common and you can buy them at all the major hardware stores.

'Anyone that has a swimming pool probably has them. There is a caution on the container, and as long as people mix them in accordance with the instructions, you should be okay.

'If you mix them the wrong way around, or if there's contaminates already in the bucket, they can react.

'Aside from the minor injuries to the gentleman's face and eyes, he is otherwise fine and there was no damage to buildings or anything else.

'If you're using pool chemicals then make sure you read the instructions, note them carefully and take notice of the cautions that are on the container.”
