Iron bar attack accused in court

The three people arrested in relation to an attack which left an iron bar embedded in the head of a 23-year-old man in Katikati are due to appear in Tauranga District Court today.

The trio, two 21-year-old men and an 18-year-old woman, were granted name suppression when they last appeared in court on February 12 due to safety reasons and the right to a fair trial.

The three people who are accused of attacking in Katikati in January were released on bail during their last appearance.

One of the 21-year-olds is charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The second man and the woman are charged with assault in connection to the attack in Katikati on January 17.

Police say the 23-year-old was attacked as he sat in his car on Clive Road.

The attack was so brutal, it left an iron bar sticking out of the side of the victim's head.

The victim managed to drive himself to a nearby gas station, where he walked inside and asked the night clerk to call an ambulance.
