Submissions close on Zespri site

Submissions regarding the eventual fate of the city council-owned Miro Street block at Mount Maunganui close today.

Tauranga City Council is seeking public feedback on the site which include Mount Maunganui Library, the head offices of Zespri and vacant land at the northern end used regularly by the Little Big Markets.

Submissions close today on the Zespri block at Mount Maunganui.

The block is bordered by Maunganui Road, Puriri Street, Miro Street and Matai Street.

The council want to sell the commercially-zoned 3594m2 property, which before the 1989 council amalgamation was the site of Mount Maunganui Borough Council.

TCC is sitting on development contributions money for the northern Mount Maunganui area that former councillor Murray Guy says can still be used to sell the land to the parks and reserves department.

It could then be re-zoned as reserve land – the same process that took place for the Phoenix Carpark in the downtown area of the Mount.

The debate over the longer-term future of the land is sparked by Zespri's expansion.

In September 2014, the kiwifruit marketer sought permission to construct temporary offices on part of the open space while they considered whether to buy and build higher and larger on the 1.56ha site, or go elsewhere.

When council sought submissions on the addition of the extra office space, there were eight in favour and 44 opposed. The construction went ahead with adjustments made to comply with some of the objections.
