Kaimai crash: woman critical

A woman remains in intensive care in Waikato Hospital after the car she was driving collided with a ute on State Highway 29 in the Lower Kaimai yesterday.

The woman, driving a Nissan Note with three other female passengers, was pulling out of McLaren Falls Road towards Tauranga on to SH29 when the vehicle was hit by a Toyota Hilux travelling south towards Hamilton.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the intersection about 3.30pmwith the driver sustaining serious injuries.

A Waikato District Health Board spokesperson says the woman, airlifted to Waikato Hospital, remains in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit this morning.

Tauranga Hospital communications advisor James Fuller says a 23-year-old remains in a stable condition in Tauranga Hospital and the two other woman, aged 24 and 26, have been discharged.

Police believe the cause of the crash is a slight lapse of judgement by the driver of the Nissan when pulling out of McLaren Falls Road.

The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries and walked away relatively unscathed, according to police.

Traffic on the Kaimai Range was delayed significantly while the road was closed to allow medical support and the rescue helicopter to take the seriously injured driver away.

A slight lapse?

Police believe the cause of the crash is a slight lapse of judgement by the driver of the Nissan when pulling out of McLaren Falls Road? Surely more than a 'slight lapse'? It is way past time the NZTA started to prioritise their expenditure to include intersections of this type.

What no tourist bashing

Firstly, I hope all involved make a speedy recovery. Nice to see for a change the media and all not bashing the poor tourist here!!! NZ needs to concentrate on the 94% of kiwis who cause accidents - as in this case. It's the locals who can reduce the crash rate significantly because they cause the most crashes. Attention and good attitude is required on our roads - simple!!!!
