Rain may reach warning amounts

As summer comes to an end and autumn arrives, MetService is predicting heavy rainfall in Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty later this week.

A moist north to northeast flow spreads onto the upper North Island from late Tuesday, then persists through to Thursday, bringing showers and patchy rain to the far north.

There is a degree of uncertainty as to how much rain will fall over the upper North Island during this time, but there is a low risk that rainfall accumulations will reach warning amounts in Coromandel Peninsula and BOP during Wednesday and Thursday.

A series of fronts are expected to affect the South Island this week, with the first on Tuesday expected to weaken and lie slow moving over the northern half on Wednesday.

A second front, preceded by strong northwesterlies, is then expected to pass over the Island late Thursday and Friday, followed quickly by a third low which may approach the far south late Friday. Periods of rain are expected about western parts, including the Alps, with strong northwesterlies late Thursday and early Friday.

There is a moderate risk of heavy rain about Fiordland and Westland during late Thursday and Friday, with a low risk of severe northwest gales about inland Canterbury, Marlborough and Wellington.
