Smith makes waves in grom series

All eyes will be on Mount Maunganui's Kea Smith in the final day of the Billabong Grom Series today, with the young surfer one of several surfers in with a chance of claiming the Under 17 Girls Division.

Elin Tawharu won the second heat of the Under 17 Girls Division in the Billabong Grom Series before the round was called off due to afternoon glare.

Piha Beach turned on excellent conditions throughout the day on Saturday, with a small 1.0m swell and light winds all day for the last round of the series, presented by Oceanbridge.

Smith needs a big result in the Billabong Grom Series this weekend – and other results to go her way in the process to have a chance of winning.

Despite starting their campaign in the late afternoon glare, with only two heats contested before the sun dropped further making it impossible to identify the surfers – Kea Smith made her presence felt on day one posting an excellent 15.0 point heat total to move through to the semifinals.

Smith was joined by fellow Mount surfer Elin Tawharu, who won the second heat before the round was called off.

The preliminary rounds of the Under 17 and Under 14 Boys Divisions were contested first thing in the morning. New Zealand representative and Mount surfer Jonas Tawharu dominated the Under 17 Boys – and was joined by Christchurch surfer Jack Wilson, Taranaki's Daniel Farr, Mount's Lee Ririnui and Ohope's Jared Gebert as Round One heat winners.

In the Under 14 Boys Division it was a round for the top seeds, with eight out of eight top seeds winning through to the second round. They were led by Whangamata's Dylan Preston, who posted a 13.0 point heat total – as well as Mount surfers Josef Jungwirth and William Van Der Beek as early stand outs.

Piha surfer Elliot Paerata-Reid returned to domestic competition on day one of the Billabong Grom Series. He brought his international game to the contest arena showing what is required to compete against the best juniors from around the world.

Paerata – Reid progressed through two rounds of the Under 20 Boys Division to move through to the semifinals. After competing in the early rounds of the National Championships earlier in the year, Paerata-Reid has spent much of summer in Australia competing in Australasian Pro Junior events.

Paerata-Reid posted heat scores of 16.5 and 14.07 in his two match ups and will now face Event Two finalists Mimiwhangata's Paul Moretti and Christchurch's Harrison Whiteside – along with Raglan surfer Taylor Hutchison in his semifinals.

The second semifinal of the Under 20 Boys Division will feature current series leader Whangamata's Dune Kennings along with Mount's Callum Chuter, Gisborne's Adam Grimson and Taranaki's Sean Kettle.

The Billabong Grom Series at Piha Beach is set to finish at 4pm today, with six series champions crowned – as well as winners from the final event.

The three event series is part of a wider New Zealand Grom Series which comprises of up to seven events for some divisions and features the country's top junior surfers.

Entry into all Surfing New Zealand sanctioned events can be completed at Surfing New Zealand under events.
