What's on Today? Triathlon

Good morning Sunners,

Welcome to the first day of March 2015. Mount Maunganui will once again provide the perfect backdrop to two major sporting events on the sand and surf today.

First up is the Coronation Classic – the third and final race in the Eves Triathlon series.

The Coronation Classic is part of the trio of triathlons attracting competitors throughout the Bay to compete in the sprint distance – 750m swim, 16km bike, 5km run – and the super sprint distance of a 375m swim, 8km bike, 2.5km run.

Competitors will swim in Pilot Bay, bike around Mount Maunganui's industrial area and finish with a run from Coronation Park, around the Mauao Base Track, and back.

Racing starts at the earlier time of 7.30am on Sunday due to the final day of Oceans 15 at Mount Maunganui Main Beach.

Oceans 15

About 800 of the country's budding surf lifesavers, aged 10-14, have descend on Mount Maunganui's Main Beach since Thursday, battling it out in Oceans 15.

Dubbed the pinnacle of junior surf lifesaving, the annual Under-14 New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships sees competitors aged 10 to 14 from 42 clubs take part in the four-day carnival.

The ones to watch out for are the lifesavers from Omanu Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, who are back to defend their 2014 title.

The event begins at 11am on Mount Main Beach.

All Ford Day

For those who don't want to feel the sand in their toes, there's plenty of perfectly polished and buffered Ford vehicles to marvel at, at the 16th annual All Ford Day at Blake Park.

About 300 Ford vehicles from customised vehicles to vintage cars will be on display at Blake Park from 10am to 3pm today.
