UPDATED 4.38PM: Police have named Nathan Luc Alain Boucher from Reze in France as the man killed in the truck crash on State Highway 2 last night.

Nathan, 23, had been staying in Tauranga since arriving in New Zealand in December.

The crash happened on a stretch of highway known as the 'Flying Mile'.

Earlier:

The man who was killed after a head-on crash on State Highway 2, near Omokoroa yesterday, has been confirmed as a French national in his 20s.

Police are currently liaising with the man's family through the French Embassy.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, but it appears that a large object fell from a truck into the path of the young man's car.

Police say he had to take evasive action, swerving to the left to avoid colliding with the object.

They said: 'In doing so it appears he lost control of the vehicle, veered back across the road and collided with a truck and trailer unit travelling in the opposite direction.”

No further details about the young man will be released until Police are satisfied that all family notifications have been carried out.
