Fourth person dies after highway crash

The 17-year-old who was critically injured in a crash in the Bay of Plenty that claimed the lives of his father, mother and sister, has also passed away.

Griffith Lee was the front seat passenger in a car that crashed with a truck on State Highway 1, near Tokoroa.

Police are still looking into why the car crossed the centreline on SH1 and crashed with a logging truck.

He was taken to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition following the crash on Tuesday, February 17.

Griffith died yesterday.

His parents, 53-year-old Warren Lee and 52-year-old Aesoon Lee, and his 20-year-old sister, Julia Lee, died at the scene of the crash.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing but police say it appears the saloon car travelling north crossed the centre line, colliding with a logging truck travelling south, between Lichfield and Tokoroa.

They add it is yet to be established what caused the car to cross the centreline.

'The initial scene examination has also shown that the rear passengers in the car were not wearing seatbelts,” say police.

The truck driver was not injured.
