A 4.7 magnitude earthquake near White Island has rattled the Bay of Plenty overnight.
GeoNet reports the earthquake struck 110 kilometres north of White Island, at a depth of 25km, at about 11.25pm.
The quake occurred 110 kilometres north of White Island.
The earthquake is categorised as ‘moderate'.
Some twenty-seven people from Coromandel Peninsula to Whakatane registered on the Geonet website saying they felt the quake, with most describing it as light.
The quake was closely followed by a 3 magnitude earthquake at 12.02am, centred 15km north-west of Gisborne at a depth of 17km.
GeoNet described the second quake as ‘light' and only three people reported feeling it.
