Motorhead Festival to hit Taupo

A new festival will be held at Taupo's Ricoh Motorsport Park for the very first time next month.

The Motorhead Festival on Sunday, March 8, is being organised and run by Tauranga-based Drift Motorsport New Zealand - the company behind D-Comp and grassroots drift events at the circuit.

The Pro-level D-Comp will remain the main draw card, but this year it will be supplemented by a number of other activities including motocross and supermoto racing, a burnout competition, show 'n' shine events for cars and trucks, and track-cruise sessions.

Event co-organiser Drew Donovan says: 'What we're trying to do is combine a whole lot of different but complimentary activities together in the one place.

'Hopefully, someone into motocross can get to see what drifting is all about, and someone into drifting, or the show car scene, can get to see what motocross and supermoto are all about.”

Complementing the activities on-and-off the track will be a dyno shootout (to find out who has the most powerful car), a car tug-of-war, live air-brushing demos and a sound-off.

There will also be trade stands and a dedicated kids' zone.

Though new here, motor-based events have been running for years in Japan, and over the past three years have become popular in Europe, where the numbers attracted to the Gatebil event in Norway rival those of many summer rock festivals

General admission on the day will cost $25 per person or $60 for a family pass (2 x adults and 2 x children under 13 years) with those under 5 years of age free.
