Police responded to calls of a man who had run from Tauranga Court, down Elizabeth Street and towards the estuary.
He was apprehended by several police units about 20 minutes after he absconded.
Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair says: "The man ran from Tauranga District Court after being sentenced to jail on drug charges.
"Police officers followed him from the courts and aprehended him on the mud flats in the estuary."

Why was this man not handcuffed to a policeman? Surely security at the courthouse is better than this!
