Footing Mount’s footpath greed

When is a footpath not a footpath? When it is a footpath in downtown Mount Maunganui? The footpath in the downtown the Mount is littered with tables, chairs and now walls.

When did we lose our footpaths to greedy café owners? Can they not make any money without shifting their customers out on to the street, blocking pedestrians getting out of cars and other shops?

They can't hold the blame totally, as the council holds most of the responsibility for this mess.

There are little rules to govern this usage of the footpath for tables and chairs and now walls are seen outside the one cafe.

When did a café have permission to build a wall on the footpath?

It's time we reclaimed our footpaths.

Tauranga City Council's team leader of bylaws and parking Stuart Goodman, who's council department governs the table and chairs on the footpath, admits it's out of control and all they have left is to prosecute offenders.

And how many have they prosecuted? None. They just sit back and let the takeover continue.

It's time we took back out footpaths. I mean they are for walking on - without obstacles.

P Morris, Mount Maunganui

I can only assume what a boring tedious life this moaner must lead. Provided the thoroughfare isn't actually blocked what's the problem? The whole cafe tables outside thing has made the Mount a more interesting place.
