Leanne Brown wins by-election

Leanne Brown has been announced as the latest Tauranga City councillor after winning a tight race in the Mount/Papamoa Ward by-election.

Voting results released this afternoon show Leanne received 3250 votes, just 42 more than former Labour candidate Clare Wilson with 3208.

Former Tauranga City councillor Murray Guy came in third with 1202, followed by Matua Parkinson, 889, and Janet Peters, 654.

A progress report yesterday afternoon had Leanne Brown in the lead by a slim margin of 32 votes, ahead of Clare.

The win means Leanne joins Steve Morris as the Mount/Papamoa Ward councillor after Clayton Mitchell stood down to become a NZ First List MP.

The voter return for the by-election was 9218 voting papers, which represents a 29.35 per cent turnout.

Postal votes were processed by Christchurch-based Electionz.com, the council's election contractor.

please, so an invoice can be sent to Clayton, which may mean he will have to give up his sky subscription and W.C.C coverage to pay it, but all that aside well done Leanne and I hope you can do a little good in the mouldy halls of power.

So Annoying

Congratulations to Leanne! Thanks to the other four candidates who stood to represent the Community. What is SO ANNOYING to me is that less than 30% of eligible voters bothered to take enough interest to cast a postal vote in a postage-paid pre-addressed envelope! ... Muppets! Bill Gibson-Patmore

I live in Mt Maunganui and did not receive voting papers. Didn't even realise the vote was done already.

Sorry Murray, Mounties know best

When it comes to knowing what's good for them the local community knows best and Leanne's election is a good example of this. The council makes plenty of mistakes but I'd like to commend them on the boardwalks at the Mount which enable the elderly to enjoy a decent stroll along this beautiful area. Of course there were some complainers but that's always the case. We could do with some safe and attractive cycle paths and I hope the rotary club is able to progress its idea at Papamoa. I know that Murray seems against it, perhaps on environmental grounds but that seems a bit rich coming from someone who races petrol guzzling cars and probably at Baypark which was from what I see built over a wetland?? Go the cycleway.

not really democratic

In a true democracy the voters should have the right to reject all candidates.....as a boss does when finding all the applicants are not suitable. "None of the above" should be an option, and if that option wins, then we wait.

It is totally democratic

If people don't vote, then that's their problem. In fact with the increasing number of plonkers in the community it's probably best that many don't vote. Democracy might have its failings but it's still the best alternative.

I think you miss the point. Let's say there were two candidates both ex conmen, liars, and known no-gooders ( I am not suggesting any of the real candidates are such). Then with your system, one of them will win. Voters must have the right to reject any or all candidates. Choosing the least objectionable is not true democracy.
